Daughter of the West: An Evening of Asian-Americana

Lisa Kori will take the stage with a full band to present "Daughter of the West," a project inspired by the history and musical contributions of Asian-Americans in the American West.

Being of Chinese and Japanese descent, she wondered what songs Chinese and Japanese immigrants brought to America, and why their music never became part of the canon of American roots music. Created through a process of research and discovery, "Daughter of the West" is a collection of songs that express Asian-American hopes and dreams.

"Daughter of the West" features Lisa Kori on guitar and vocals, alongside a diverse ensemble of musicians whose musical backgrounds bridge multiple cultures: Chinese, Japanese, and the American West.

Danting Qiao (NY) is the former concertmaster of the Peking University Chinese Orchestra and will be playing erhu, a two-stringed Chinese fiddle.

Jake Larcqua (CO) is an ethnomusicologist who studies Japanese music and culture under master Yoko Hiraoka. He will be joining on shamisen, a Japanese stringed instrument with similarities to a banjo.

Matt Orenstein (CA) is a bassist, composer and audio engineer based in Los Angeles. He will be joining on Bass VI, a six stringed electric bass.

Paul Pearcy (CO) is an accomplished percussionist who will be joining on drum kit and gong, whose credits include The Chicks, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and James McMurtry.

And last but not least, Don Richmond (CO), is a skilled multi-intrumentalist known for his longstanding contributions to Southwest Americana, including groups such as Tumbleweed, Hired Hands, and the New Mexico-based band the Rifters. He will be playing an assortment of Western stringed instruments.

The show is sliding scale, with a suggested donation of $20.
