Explore the face not as surface, but as psychological terrain.
Beginning with traditional portrait methods focused on likeness and form, participants then dismantle what they’ve built—distorting, disrupting, and reassembling the image through both traditional and experimental media.
The process emphasizes construction, destruction, and reconstruction as a way to move beyond representation and toward presence. The face becomes a site of inquiry rather than reproduction: a place where memory, identity, fragmentation, and emotion surface through material intervention.
By engaging in erosion, layering, and reformation, students are invited to investigate what remains when resemblance collapses and what deeper likeness emerges in its place. The work shifts from depiction to discovery, opening a dialogue between outer form and interior experience.
Workshop Highlights
*Portrait construction using traditional drawing and painting techniques
*Deconstruction through experimental mark-making and material disruption
*Exploration of identity, memory, and psychological form
*Individual and group critique focused on meaning and visual language
*Emphasis on process, emotional intelligence, and visual inquiry
*Accessible to intermediate and advanced artists

“Lisa Bryson is everything someone like me who paints for my own enjoyment could ask for in an instructor. Learning with Lisa is both challenging and fun. Challenging because she asks students to stretch themselves and fun because she encourages creativity and individuality. In class, she demonstrates different techniques to the group and offers guidance and encouragement one-on-one. I highly recommend Lisa for her breadth of knowledge, teaching style, and engaging personality.
