Lion City Stories 2026: The Sustainable Way Forward
About this Event
This series of Lion City Stories 2026 closes by looking forward. Singapore has no natural water, little land, and a coastline barely above the sea — and this three-hour walk takes you to the places where the answers to all three are physically built, hiding in plain sight across Marina Bay.
We start at Raffles Place and look up at Ocean Financial Centre, one of Singapore's greenest office towers — solar panels worked into the façade, and water and energy systems that made it a benchmark for the whole business district. Then we go underground into the Marina Underground network, where a district cooling system chills an entire downtown from a central plant instead of thousands of separate air-conditioners, and where sheltered pedestrian links quietly change how a tropical city moves.
Emerging onto the Marina Promenade, the view explains itself. The Marina Reservoir below you was open sea within living memory: dammed, desalted by rainfall, and turned into freshwater storage in the middle of the central business district — a piece of national water strategy doubling as a waterfront. After a break, we look at Marina Bay Sands not as a postcard but as an engineering and sustainability case study.
The walk finishes in Gardens by the Bay. At Dragonfly Lake and Bayfront Pavilion, aquatic plants filter the water as a living cleansing system; in the Colonial Gardens, the plants tell the story of the crops and trade that built the city. And at Supertree Grove, your guide reveals what most visitors never notice — the Supertrees are not decoration. They are working infrastructure: solar canopies, rainwater collectors and the venting system for the conservatories.
Agenda

Start of Tour
Info: Check in starts 10 minutes before the tour. This is a fully guided tour and the tour will start promptly at 09:00am. The meeting point is at Raffles Place MRT Station (NS26/EW14) - Exit A, Street Level.
Raffles Place & Ocean Financial Centre
Info: We begin in the heart of the financial district, where sustainability is written into the skyline. Ocean Financial Centre is among Singapore's greenest office towers — solar panels worked into the façade, and water and energy systems that set a benchmark for the whole business district. A reminder that the greening of Singapore is not only about parks.
Marina Promenade & Marina Reservoir
Info: Emerging onto the waterfront, the view explains itself. The water in front of you was open sea within living memory — dammed at the river mouth, flushed of salt by rainfall, and turned into freshwater storage in the middle of the city. A piece of national water strategy that doubles as Singapore's most photographed waterfront.
Marina Bay Sands
Info: A rest stop with the skyline as backdrop. We look at Marina Bay Sands not as a postcard but as a case study — the scale of engineering, energy and water demand involved in building on reclaimed land, and what it takes to run a development of this size responsibly.
Dragonfly Lake & Colonial Gardens
Info: Entering Gardens by the Bay, the engineering hides inside the landscaping. At Dragonfly Lake, aquatic plants filter the water as a living cleansing system — no pumps, no chemicals, and dragonflies as the proof it works. In the Colonial Gardens nearby, the planting tells a different story: the crops and spices that drew empires to this region in the first place.
End of tour at Supertree Grove
Info: We finish beneath the icons, where your guide reveals what most visitors never notice. The Supertrees are not decoration — their canopies carry solar cells, their structures harvest rainwater, and there are chimneys among them venting the conservatories next door. Beautiful, and hard at work.
