Matt Coulter, the head propagator at the Adelaide Botanic Gardens, will be speaking about his pioneering work propagating the Sumatran Corpse Flower, Amorphophallus titanium.
The plant in bloom has attracted literally thousands of people to the Botanic Gardens, with people queuing to see the plant, but Matt’s goal has primarily been to save the plant from extinction. Drawing on the success of propagation saving other species Matt hopes his work will help offset plant poaching by making it more widely available.
Matt has been involved in the horticultural industry for the past 39 years, in that time Matt has specialised in plant propagation and production working across three states, he has been employed as horticulturist, assistant manager, propagation manager, production manager and nursery manager for a range of commercial nurseries, he also has worked as a lab technician in germinating orchids in vitro.
For the past 17 years Matt has been employed by the Botanic Gardens & State Herbarium of SA managing the propagation and production of plant material for the Adelaide, Wittunga and Mount Lofty Botanic Gardens. Part of Matt's role is the curation of special collections, including and research on the Sumatran Corpse Flower Amorphophallus titanium and others in the genus.
