About this Event

This immersive exhibition will feature Nigerian food samples, Art, Vendors, a book release and book signing of the newest book from author, Alexy Irving-Alleyne.

More about the book: "WhereNextLex Vol. 2"

This photography book follows Alexy Irving-Alleyne’s journey while in Nigeria, Africa, in 2017. Her invitation to Nigeria came when a family friend asked Alexy to photograph her sister's wedding. The wedding was a two-day affair, and the remainder of Alexy’s two weeks there took her from the ocean to the mountains and everywhere in between. Through her book and photo documentation on display, she showcases how plants changed her direction in life, the spiritual traditions she witnessed, tips to make your experience better, and everything that makes the land of Nigeria so unique, full of life and worthy of being added to your bucket list of places to visit.

More about the artist: Alexy Irving-Alleyne

Alexy is a garden educator and photojournalist born and raised in St. louis, MO and living in Chicago. She explores the intersection of race and environmental consciousness. Utilizing photography, she hopes to to inspire an appreciation for nature and the different people that occupy this world, from cultures to communities to individuals. In her work, she uses natural environments to tell stories about local agricultural communities, exploring new cities and to spark a curiosity for folks to leave their comfort zone. She challenges preconceived notions of an urban disconnect from nature and invite the audience to discover their own process to reconnect with the natural world. Her work helps her to navigate my personal and cultural history through the lens of the black diaspora experience.

More about the venue: Alt_Space

A collaboration between Jon Veal and Jordan Campbell, Alt Space Chicago (abbreviated alt_) was created in response to the trauma of the Black community and the belief that art could be used as a tool for healing. Campbell’s family history of community stewardship + entrepreneurship and Veal’s lifelong passion for art merged to positively disrupt their communities through tangible acts of service. Sharing the mutual motivators of family, community, change and servanthood, Veal and Campbell moved forward to create alt_.

Since its inception, alt_ has expanded into an artist-led, Chicago-based cultural non-profit that is dedicated to revitalization + service + empowerment through art, faith, and community. alt_ provides an alternative to the dominant cultural narrative, manifesting new opportunities on the South and West Sides of Chicago.
