How did a shy mathematics tutor interest Queen Victoria and become a global phenomenon?
About this Event
Event Photos

For nearly 30 years, this famous author spent part of each year at his unmarried sisters' home, The Chestnuts, where he died in 1898. On this walk you will see the buildings associated with him and hear how he spent his days writing, visiting and taking photographs.

The walk is about a half a mile long with regular stops and about 90 minutes in duration. You should wear suitable clothing for the prevailing weather conditions.

This walk is a conventional guided tour about the Reverend Charles Dodgson's life, his family, his work and the times he spent in Guildford. We also do a 'Fantastical Mr Carroll' walk which looks in more detail at how the Alice stories came to be written down, illustrated and published.

'I am intrigued by the contrast between Charles Dodgson the shy mathematician and his alter ego, Lewis Carroll who loved the theatre, and playing amusing games.'

- David, one of the guides
