Lessons from a revolution. The Spanish Civil War 90 years on
About this Event
On 17 July 1936, General Francisco Franco launched a military coup against the left wing democratically elected Spanish government, unleashing events which would see workers and peasants fight back taking control of land and key centres of the Spanish economy and state. Trotsky described Spanish workers instinctive response as better than Russian workers prior to the revolution in 1917. George Orwell described it as workers in the saddle.
But by March 1939 Franco was victorious and ruled Spain as a fascist dictatorship until his death in 1975. Could fascism have been halted in Spain in what was a prelude to World War 2. Join us for a discussion about why hope turned to tragedy and what we can learn for today's fight against fascism and the kind of organisation we need.
Michael Lavalette who will lead off the discussion is a socialist who has represented people in Preston as a councillor and came second to Labour in Preston at the last general election.
