Legacy in Every Tile: Illustrating the History of the Christiansburg Industrial Institute is an interactive presentation that shares about the rich and often under-told history of the Christiansburg Industrial Institute (CII). Led by CI, Inc. interns, Jordin Harris and Sasha Halfon-DeLay, with staff support, the program explores the school’s founding, its role as a center for Black and industrial education in Southwest Virginia, and its place within the broader history of slavery, Reconstruction, industrialization, and Jim Crow.
As part of the program, attendees create painted tiles inspired by the stories, themes, and lessons shared during the presentation. These individual pieces are assembled into a collective mosaic, symbolizing shared memory, community dialogue, and the ongoing responsibility of stewardship.
