🧠 Lecture: "The World’s Largest Physics Experiments"
🎤 Speaker: Dr. Grant Kendrick Parker
Early physics experiments could fit on a tabletop or a rooftop telescope. Today, they span cities, mountains, and even miles underground. You may have heard of CERN’s Large Hadron Collider, a city-sized particle collider—but what about a telescope carved into a skyscraper-sized block of ice? Or a particle detector buried two miles beneath a mountain in an abandoned salt mine? Or a fusion reactor as large as a warehouse?
In this fascinating talk, you’ll explore some of the biggest experiments on Earth and discover how physicists are using them to tackle humanity’s most challenging scientific questions.
Dr. Grant Kendrick Parker is a particle physicist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory whose research probes the deepest mysteries in physics. His work, published in Nature Physics and Physical Review Letters, has set world-leading limits on new physics phenomena, including additional fundamental forces and models of quantum gravity. He currently focuses on the mystery of missing antimatter in the universe and on building new machine learning tools for particle detectors.
