About this Event

Bookshop West Portal will be welcoming renowned photographers Greg Gaar and Jay Blakesberg to celebrate Gaar's new photography book, San Francisco Street Scenes 1972-1991.

Greg Gaar is a born and raised San Franciscan whose work spans from the early 1970s to the early 1990s. His photographs capture a city in flux, documenting street preachers, musicians, protesters, Pride revelers, the down and out, and the early days of the Gay Pride movement, all woven together with a healthy dose of San Francisco rock and roll. Greg has a rare gift for turning fleeting street moments into timeless images, and his work stands as an important visual record of Baghdad by the Bay during one of its most vibrant and transformative eras.

About the Photographer:

Greg Gaar (b. 1948) is a native San Franciscan, photojournalist, and environmentalist. He picked up a camera as a teenager, sharpened his eye in the Navy, then trained as a photojournalist at City College on the GI Bill before hitting the streets of San Francisco full time. He lived in Haight-Ashbury in a Queen Anne Victorian from 1896, part of a city where creative people could still afford to stay and make work. From street preachers and street musicians to the down and out, the early days of Gay Pride in SF, protests, and a healthy dose of San Francisco rock and roll, Gaar's work captures a unique moment in time in the Bay, a city that has changed dramatically since. Powerful and in your face, yet intimate, in a truly original style. This is Greg’s first coffee table book.
