🧠Lecture: "The Math That Built the Modern World: AI, GPS, and More"
🎤 Speaker: Professor of Mathematics, Dr. Ismar Volić
Join us for a fascinating evening as Professor Ismar Volić reveals the hidden mathematics powering the technologies we rely on every day. From AI and machine learning to GPS and cryptocurrency, much of what feels cutting-edge is actually built on classical math—some of it developed centuries ago.
Starting with simple, accessible concepts, Professor Volić will trace how abstract mathematical ideas become the engines behind today’s most transformative tools, reshaping how we live, work, and connect.
Ismar Volić is a Professor of Mathematics and Director of the Institute for Mathematics and Democracy at Wellesley College. A graduate of Boston University with a Ph.D. from Brown University, his research spans topology and social choice theory. He has authored numerous articles and books, delivered over three hundred lectures in more than twenty countries, and held visiting positions at Harvard, MIT, and the University of Virginia. His latest book, Making Democracy Count, won the Mathematical Association of America’s Euler Prize and was a finalist for the PROSE award.
