Join us for a compelling evening as Prof. Nick Rosenthal explores how generations of Indigenous artists have worked to make a place for Native art in North American culture and the broader art world.

This lecture traces the stories of Native artists as they navigate questions of how to use art for social and political goals, what defines “Indian art,” and how to sustain themselves as working artists. Prof. Rosenthal will show how each generation built on earlier struggles, using their work in museums, galleries, and public spaces to argue for the value of Native cultures and to rewrite North American history from Indigenous perspectives.

Nicolas Rosenthal is Chair and Professor of History at Loyola Marymount University, where he has taught Native American and United States history for over twenty years. He is the author of Reimagining Indian Country: Native American Migration and Identity in Twentieth-Century Los Angeles and Painting Native American: Indigenous Artists in the Twentieth Century.
