🧠Lecture: "Transhumanism and Religion: Salvation Through Technology"
🎤 Speaker: Matthew Zaro Fisher, PhD
Join us for a thought‑provoking evening as Matthew Zaro Fisher, PhD, introduces the fascinating world of transhumanism and its surprising parallels with religious belief and practice. Over the past thirty years, the human enhancement movement has envisioned technology as a path to overcoming human limitations and even achieving a kind of secular salvation.
We’ll explore three major transhumanist scenarios: the cyborg, where humans merge with technology from simple tools like eyeglasses to neural implants; artificial intelligence, created in our image yet potentially transcending our cognitive and physical limits; and mind upload, which imagines transferring consciousness to computer substrates to live forever in digital simulations—perhaps ones we already inhabit.
Along the way, you’ll encounter key technical and philosophical ideas like Moore’s law and extropy, and consider how old religious hopes for transcendence and eternal life reappear in these futuristic visions. Attendees will leave with a clearer grasp of the promises and perils of transhumanism, and how religious thought continues to shape even our most secular technological dreams.
