From wicked child-snatchers to feminist icons, the witch has haunted cinema since its earliest days. Join Prof. JR Pepper for an engaging journey through film history, exploring how witches on screen reflect shifting cultural anxieties around gender, sexuality, power, and the supernatural.
By examining iconic movies and recurring visual tropes, this lecture reveals how the cinematic witch has evolved across genres—from horror and fantasy to arthouse and beyond—remaining one of the most adaptable and revealing figures in film.
JR Pepper is an adjunct professor of art history at CUNY Brooklyn College, a freelance lecturer, photographer, and self-described “professional eccentric.” She is known for her work in spirit photography, featured in Haunted America: FAQ, Vice.com, and Musee Magazine. Pepper regularly lectures for The Dead Ladies, Brooklyn Brainery, and the Long Island Convention of Horror, and leads tours at Green-Wood Cemetery. She is the photographer and author of two books on cemeteries: Buried Boston: America’s Revolutionary Necropolis and Buried New Orleans: The Resilient Cemeteries of the Crescent City.
