Migration scientist Dr. Andrew Farnsworth will share scientific perspectives on bird migration in the Anthropocene, focusing on surprising patterns in and around the five boroughs.
Dr. Farnsworth will connect the growing passion for birding with powerful, data-driven tools that reveal when, where, and how birds are on the move. He’ll highlight how we observe migration with our own senses and how technologies like weather radar, acoustic monitoring, and publicly available apps allow anyone to experience this spectacle in real time.
You’ll also discover how the biology of birds’ journeys resonates with human lives in motion, and how simple actions—like reducing light pollution—can protect millions of nocturnally migrating birds.
Dr. Andrew Farnsworth is a migration scientist at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s Center for Avian Population Studies and a lead contributor to BirdCast, eBird, and Merlin, working at the intersection of science, conservation, and public engagement.
