Learn to Weave Clay!

Join local artist Kris Owens for a one day, hands-on pottery class, where students will learn how to transform strips of clay into a beautiful basket inspired vessels. Using hand building techniques, students will learn how to keep clay workable, weaving methods, attaching clay rims and feet, ,structural reinforcement, refinement and decorative finishing. At the end of the course, each student will be able to prepare and maintain clay at the proper moisture level for weaving, learn various weaving techniques, learn to cleanly cut shapes from clay and learn to join, compress and reinforce attachments. Each student will have completed a functional or decorative clay basket.

More about Kris Owens:

I began my journey with clay in 1980 thru a course at Tidewater Community College. I’ve participated in the Boardwalk Art Show, the Neptune Festival, Stockley Gardens and many others along the east coast. I was the pottery instructor at Friends School in Virginia Beach and have taught numerous workshops for children and adults. I owned and operated Earth Spirit Pottery in Seagrove, NC in the 90’s. It was there I began weaving with clay.
