About this Event
Try out nålbinding, an old textile tradition that has roots around the world but has been especially well preserved in Scandinavia! Sometimes called “Viking knitting,” nålbinding uses only a simple single needle and short strands of wool to create a fabric. In Scandinavia, this was used to create sturdy socks, mittens, and hats, but this looping technique also independently arose in other places and was used for everything from garments to fishing nets! The earliest examples of nalbinding have been found in Israel and date back to 6,000 BC.
In this intro class, students will learn a little about the history of nålbinding, and practice some basic stitches to start a hat. You’ll leave with the knowledge you need to continue this craft at home! This is an excellent workshop for anyone looking to explore the cross-over of textiles, and ancient history.
Short strands of practice yarn will be supplied for your first stitches. Alpaca wool for your home project will be available for purchase at the location, Butterfly Hill Farm Store. It is advised to purchase your wool before the end of class to get help starting your home hat. Students will receive a beginner's needle for class and to bring home to continue their project. This class welcomes ages 15+.
