Leanne Betasamosake Simpson is one of the most compelling Indigenous voices of her generation. A Michi Saagiig Nishnaabeg writer, musician, and scholar, Simpson’s work breaks open the boundaries between story and song—bringing audiences into a rich and layered world of sound, light, and sovereign creativity.Rooted in Nishnaabeg language, thought, and land-based practice, her work draws on more than two decades of independent scholarship and community education. Her music, including the Polaris Prize–shortlisted Theory of Ice, combines folk, spoken word, and experimental sound. As an author, she has gained acclaim for books like Noopiming: The Cure for White Ladies and Rehearsals for Living, both shortlisted for Governor General’s Literary Awards.
Her most recent work, Theory of Water, is a national bestseller. Reimagining water’s relationship to all beings and life-forces, Simpson envisions it as a catalyst for radical change, capable of birthing a new world.
Whether on stage or on the page, Simpson invites audiences into layered worlds where Indigenous ways of knowing become powerful acts of resilience, care, and transformation.
