Le Relais was an arts club set up and run between 2013 and 2019 by composer Jules Maxwell, dance artists Charlotte Darbyshire and Henrietta Hale and film maker Tony Wadham when they all lived at Relais de la Baie in Noyelles Sur Mer, Northern France.
At Le Relais people came to share food, music, dance, film and ideas. The word “relais” comes from the old French word “relaissier” (to abandon, release).
In earlier times, a Relais was a place where riders could stop to switch from tired horses to fresh ones in order to continue their journey.
Le Relais at The Still Room is an opportunity to experience the concept anew in the delightful surroundings of The Still Room.

Jules Maxwell is a composer and songwriter from Northern Ireland. He has worked extensively at Shakespeare’s Globe, the National Theatre and the Young Vic in London and in 2019 his debut opera The Lost Thing was presented at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden. Since 2012 he has been keyboard player with the band Dead Can Dance. He co-wrote a collection of songs with Lisa Gerrard for an album by Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares and has composed music for a wide variety of choreographers including Wayne McGregor, Jasmin Vardimon, Jane Mason, Cathy Marston, Charlotte Darbyshire, Theo Clinkard, Filip Van Huffel, Vincent Dance Theatre, Laila Diallo, Hofesh Schecter and Jeanine Durning.
