About this Event
This course provides law enforcement officers and legal professionals with legal updates directly related to their response to calls for mental health and persons in crisis. The updates will include case reviews from the State of Ohio and other jurisdictions, federal appellate and supreme court decisions.
Law Enforcement takes direction and guidance from our state and federal courts on their response to mental illness and crisis. Recent and landmark court decisions help determine proper law enforcement response. A thorough understanding of the law enforcement view is of the utmost importance to legal practitioners.
The cases to be explored all speak on topics including use of force, use of deadly force, de-escalation, emergency hospitalization and developing probable cause on mental health calls for service. All cases are derived from resources that examine state and federal court decisions including the twelve Ohio appellate districts, the Ohio Supreme Court, the United States circuit courts, and the United States Supreme Court. Cases will also be examined for the Missouri State Supreme Court and District courts of Eastern and Western counties.
The course shall be a two-hour event on Franciscan’s beautiful campus.
