About this Event
Distributed Large Volume Metrology for Industrial Automation of Dynamic Processes Workshop
Hosted at Factory 2050, Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC)
Location: Factory 2050, Europa Avenue, Tinsley, Sheffield, Rotherham S9 1ZA
Date: 11th May 2026
Organised by: National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in collaboration with Advance Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC)
Overview
Distributed Large Volume Metrology (DLVM) technologies have the potential to unlock new forms of flexible, traceable industrial automation. By enabling real-time robot guidance, agile reconfiguration, and dynamic process correction, DLVM can support manufacturing environments where both precision and adaptability are required.
Despite this potential, adoption within the UK remains limited. Key barriers include a lack of standardised performance characterisation, particularly for dynamic measurements, and limited awareness of emerging test methods.
This one-day technical workshop brings together system manufacturers, integrators, and industrial end users to explore the current state of DLVM in manufacturing. The event focuses specifically on dynamic measurement (measuring objects in motion), highlighting industry challenges, capturing user requirements, and providing an opportunity for NPL to demonstrate a proposed test methodology (https://www.mdpi.com/2673-8244/6/1/7) that supports in situ system characterisation, system development, and future standardisation activities.
To help tailor the workshop to the needs and experience of participants, we ask all delegates to complete a brief preevent questionnaire (five multiple choice questions). Your responses will help us align the agenda with real industrial requirements. Please complete the questionnaire here: preevent questionnaire
Keywords: Industrial motion capture systems, iGPS metrology, Realtime 3D tracking systems, Dynamic 6DoF tracking, Robot guidance metrology, Traceable robot automation
Objectives
- Provide a clear, application driven introduction to DLVM for industrial automation.
- Share NPL’s candidate dynamic performance test method for 6 DoF (+ time) DLVM systems.
- Demonstrate the test methodology and resulting measurement outputs in a live environment.
- Facilitate industry discussion on requirements, barriers, and pathways to adoption.
- Identify common challenges and opportunities to influence standardisation and future R&D.
For all NPL events we aim to accommodate specific needs and personal circumstances, but are reliant on individuals sharing this information with us. If you have any specific requirements or adjustments to support your attendance (whether in person or virtual), please do let us know by emailing [email protected], so that we can discuss how we can best support you. Any information shared will be confidential and deleted after the event.
