As part of our annual May Day celebrations, Sheffield TUC is pleased to announce the launch of a new pamphlet The 1926 General Strike in Sheffield, commemorating the centenary of the General Strike.
The General Strike was an unparalleled confrontation between workers, big business and the state, and over the nine days (4th to 12th of May) Sheffield TUC (or Sheffield Trades and Labour Council, as it was then known) played a key role in coordinating the local action.
Whether organising a Central Disputes Committee that sat in continuous session to oversee the strike, organising permits for transport workers to move essential goods, or mediating between different unions, the authorities and the national TUC, our Trades Council was at the heart of the action.
That history is expertly captured in this special centenary pamphlet by archivist and local historian, Edd Mustill, author of Britain's Revolutionary Summer: The General Strike of 1926, and The Sheffield Workers' Committee: Rank and file trade unionism during the First World War.
At the launch event, Edd will provide an overview of the pamphlet and lead a discussion on this pivotal moment in Sheffield labour movement history.
