Landscape Painting Lesson & Demonstration by Paul Chizik

This introductory workshop focuses on how artists can effectively use photographs as reference material when creating landscape paintings. Designed as a foundational first session, the class centres on a live demonstration that explores how to translate a photographic image into a compelling painted composition.
Participants will be introduced to key concepts such as composition, value, colour interpretation, and simplifying visual information—skills essential for working from reference images without becoming overly dependent on them. The session will also open a broader discussion on observation and interpretation, providing a natural entry point into the practice of plein air painting and the differences between working from life versus photographs.
A significant portion of the class will be dedicated to understanding materials and methods, including paint handling, surface preparation, and studio setup. Rather than producing a finished work, participants will focus on building technical awareness and confidence, establishing a strong foundation for future hands-on painting sessions.
A follow up workshop will be offered on August 9 from 10am-5pm, where participants will paint en plein air.
Limited tickets available through the link.
