Land and Roots Workshop Series: Understanding Heirs' Property and Protecting Your Family Legacy
Have you inherited family property or know someone who has? Are you unsure who legally owns a piece of inherited land or how multiple family members can move forward together? The Land and Roots Workshop Series is a free, interactive, five-week educational program designed to help participants better understand heirs' property and the steps families can take to protect generational assets.
Hosted through a partnership between the Louisville and Jefferson County Landbank Authority, the Office of Housing and Community Development's Vacant and Abandoned Properties (VAP) Team, and Kentucky State University, this series combines expert instruction with practical, hands-on activities to help participants navigate the often-complicated issues surrounding inherited property.
Throughout the series, participants will learn about:
- What heirs' property is and why it matters
- How to identify legal heirs and determine ownership interests
- Common legal and title challenges affecting inherited property
- Options for resolving ownership issues and clearing title
- Estate planning and succession planning strategies to help preserve family property for future generations
As part of the workshop, participants will work on developing their own family tree and gathering information that may be useful in understanding property ownership. This may include the names of family members, birth and death dates, counties where relatives passed away, whether they had a will, and contact information for living heirs when available.
The series is designed to be interactive, giving participants opportunities to ask questions, learn from legal and housing professionals, and connect with others facing similar challenges.
As an added benefit, participants who demonstrate strong attendance and active participation throughout the workshop series will have the opportunity to receive complimentary preparation of a legal Last Will and Testament by a licensed attorney, helping them take an important step toward protecting their family's future.
Whether you're currently dealing with heirs' property, planning for the next generation, or simply want to better understand the process, the Land and Roots Workshop Series offers valuable knowledge, practical resources, and expert guidance to help you build a stronger foundation for your family's legacy.
