Lammas Fair

Step back in time and witness one of Exeter’s oldest traditions.
Join us for the annual Proclamation of Lammas Fair, a ceremony that has been taking place in Exeter for more than 900 years, dating back to before the Norman Conquest.
The tradition marks Lammas Day, when the first fruits of the harvest were offered to the Church. Historically, the fair brought traders together from across the region and was opened with the reading of a Royal Proclamation and the raising of the famous Lammas Fair White Glove – a symbol of the Crown’s protection and the keeping of the peace.
While the market stalls disappeared long ago, Exeter continues to honour this remarkable piece of the city’s history by proclaiming the Fair and hoisting the White Glove, just as generations have done before us.
Come along and experience a unique ceremony that connects Exeter’s present with its medieval past.
