Begin your day early with a 5:30 AM departure from Nairobi to maximize your time at the park. After pick-up from your hotel or designated point in the city you’ll head towards Lake Nakuru National Park driving through the scenic Great Rift Valley escarpment. Along the way make a brief stop at the Rift Valley Viewpoint to stretch take in the stunning views and snap a few photos of the vast landscape below.
You should arrive at Lake Nakuru National Park around 8:00 AM. Once you’ve passed through the park’s main gate near Nakuru Town the game drive begins. In the morning explore the park’s rich wildlife. The park is famous for its populations of white and black rhinos as well as lions leopards buffaloes and various species of antelopes. Be sure to visit Baboon Cliff which offers a panoramic view of Lake Nakuru and the surrounding park. As you drive closer to the lake you’ll be treated to a variety of bird species including flamingos (seasonal) pelicans and other migratory birds that flock to this shallow soda lake.
At around 11:00 AM head towards Makalia Falls for a scenic break. The falls provide a peaceful spot to stretch your legs enjoy the view and take some memorable photos. The cool misty air and the gentle sound of the water offer a nice contrast to the otherwise warm savannah surroundings.
By noon it’s time for lunch. You can either bring a packed picnic lunch to enjoy at one of the park’s designated picnic spots or head to one of the nearby lodges such as Sarova Lion Hill Lodge or Lake Nakuru Lodge for a buffet lunch. Relax and refuel while soaking in the peaceful ambiance of the park.
After lunch around 1:30 PM continue your afternoon game drive. This drive takes you through the Acacia Woodlands and the unique Euphorbia Forest where you’ll spot even more wildlife such as Rothschild giraffes zebras and monkeys. In the cooler part of the day animals tend to be more active offering great opportunities for wildlife sightings.
As the day draws to a close exit the park at around 3:30 PM and begin the journey back to Nairobi. The drive back offers more chances to appreciate the surrounding landscapes. You should arrive in Nairobi by around 6:30 PM marking the end of your adventure with a drop-off at your hotel or home.
