Laboratory Hardware Engineering 101: Fluorimeter

When you enter a laboratory, there are key pieces of equipment that you expect to see, and knowing how to use them is essential to modern science. But there's more to the technology than simply sitting at the bench and pressing some buttons.
Join us on September 6th for a four-hour, hands-on class where participants will build their own DIY optical measurement instrument based on the open-source DIYNAFLUOR DNA fluorometer project. Participants will work through the basic electronics, optics, 3D-printed components, and software that allow the instrument to detect fluorescence from biological samples. Along the way, we’ll explore the fundamentals of light measurement, fluorescence, calibration, and how these principles are used in modern laboratory instruments. No advanced engineering experience is required - the goal is to learn by building, troubleshooting, and experimenting together. By the end of the four-hour session, participants will understand how a surprisingly capable scientific instrument can be built from inexpensive, readily available components.
