An unconventional work in every way, Godfrey Reggio’s KOYAANISQATSI was a sensation upon its initial release and retains a cult-like following to this day. A wordless, yet entrancing collage of Philip Glass’s hypnotic score and cinematographer Ron Fricke’s monumental imagery, this trippy survey of the Northern Hemisphere’s rapidly changing environment shuttles viewers from one jaw-dropping vision to the next, moving from images of untouched nature to others depicting human beings’ increasing dependence on technology. Heavily utilizing trippy time-lapse photography to suggest the frenetic pace of modern life, KOYAANISQATSI—whose title comes from a Hopi word meaning “life out of balance”—is a plea for humanity to find some equilibrium with the fragile planet we all inhabit. Whatever you think of its hippie-ish ecological message, the film remains one of cinema’s great transformative experiences. No one who’s seen it can ever shake its awe-inducing power.
This screening is part of Arkadin’s April 2026 series, HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW?—featuring botanical wonders, homicidal flora, and secret gardens for you to make your escape.
