About this Event

Workshop: Knowing the Weeds in Your Garden

Sunday August 30th, 10am - 12pm (PST)

Instructor: J.R. Blair

This IN-PERSON WORKSHOP will be hosted at Alemany Farm.

What exactly is a W**d and how do you identify them in your own garden and yard? What makes certain plants so successful ("weedy") in spite of the local climate, competition with other plants, and our seemingly endless efforts to control them? How can we effectively control weeds in our Bay Area gardens in a safe, non-toxic way? This workshop will be geared towards the weeds of the San Francisco Peninsula, but much of the information will be applicable to other parts of California and beyond.

The format of this class will be mostly discussion and lecture with live examples and an opportunity to go into the field for observations and further discussion.

J.R. Blair has been volunteering at Alemany Farm since 2021, primarily controlling certain pernicious weeds. Before his retirement in 2020, he was a lecturer of Biology at San Francisco State University, mainly teaching botany classes. He has been controlling weeds at his house in San Mateo County for over 30 years, seemingly a lifelong endeavor.

Suggested Donation: $35 No one turned away for lack of funds. Our workshops are sliding scale. Please give at the amount that is available to you and feels meaningful. Your contributions at the suggested donation level and above support the growing and distribution of free produce at Alemany Farm.

Accessibility Information: This workshop will be held outdoors. About two thirds of the workshop will be a lecture / discussion held under the shade of the willow tree and then an (optional) walking portion into the field to look at the plants more closely. Alemany Farm is not ADA accessible at this time. Pathways are on uneven ground. The bathrooms are accessible only by stairway. We apologize for any inconvenience.
