Cartilage Disorders of the Knee and Common Athletic Injuries of the Foot and Ankle: Evaluation and Treatment

Course Outline:

This course will cover the evaluation, diagnosis and surgical treatment of cartilage disorders of the knee. We will review the bony and soft tissue anatomy of the knee and will discuss the different types of cartilage disorders and best surgical and nonsurgical treatment approaches for each. This course will also cover evaluation and treatment of common athletic injuries of the foot and ankle.

We will review surgical vs nonsurgical approaches for Achilles tendon rupture management, lateral ankle instability, and ankle fractures. Participants will understand the imperative patient history elements of knee and ankle examinations and identify which patient history components, special tests and diagnostic imaging are affiliated with knee, foot and ankle pathology.

Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course, it is expected that the attendees will be able to:

• Identify the best treatment-based approaches for lateral ankle instability, and the importance of ruling out OCD
• Understand surgical and nonsurgical approaches for Achilles tendon rupture management, as well as the surgical timing when surgery becomes necessary and the emergence of minimally invasive procedures
• Identify evidence based red flags when assessing ankle fractures and the role of CT scan to identify isolated malleolus fractures
• Consider the importance of injury (acute or degenerative) in relation to individual characteristics associated with the breadth and variety of cartilage disorders and clinical evaluation to identify their presence
• Will understand the treatment options for symptomatic cartilage lesions to be used for knee preservation, and the pros and cons of these options
• Will understand the important role of bony alignment and morphology as well as soft tissue recovery in the success of cartilage restoration procedures
