Kirtan is a devotional practice of call and response singing in Sanskrit. Sanskrit is a special language that is interconnected and woven through reality. The speech of the Goddess is what the world is made of in this cosmology, so when we sing in Sanskrit it brings us in touch with our own essence nature and the essence of everything. This essence nature that we all share in equally is imbued with longing, clarity, goodness, primordial intelligence, creativity, and devotion. Singing Kirtan is a way to get in touch with our heart and the shared value of everyone and everything here.
We are always being communicated to by this awake, aware reality and singing kirtan helps us to become better listeners and communicators. It is also a practice of tapping into a shared sense of joy and deep communal nourishment. As we navigate the falling away of the current societal structures that are no longer serving us, we gather to join voices and hearts in creating new pathways of connection and solidarity with ourselves and others.
Everyone is welcome and there will be print outs of the words for extra support but the phrases we will sing are simple and easy to pick up on especially with the melody and repetition of song. This is a by donation event (10$ or whatever feels right for you as an energy exchange), but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. We will have some percussion instruments to share if you feel like participating in that way. Kirtan can build to a really exuberant and joyful pace, so dancing is also welcomed if you feel inspired to move. Stillness and quiet are welcomed as well if you would just like to relax and share in the communal vibe by listening.
