George Jones is widely recognized as the greatest singer in country music. From his start as a flat-topped honky-tonker to his reign as king of the country crooners, his hit-making career spanned the history of country music after WWII, scoring number one hits in four different decades and helping to define the art of singing country music. Jill Rogers & Crying Time bring their celebration of the King of Country to Ashkenaz, featuring some of the Bay Area’s most celebrated singers interpreting the heart-breaking and boot stomping songs of George Jones. Hear the hits, the duets, and the deep cuts performed by Smelley Kelley (Red Meat), Joe Rut (Sunshine Shovelers - Best Local Band 2024 - East Bay Express), Maurice Tani (77 El Deora), Hank & Lynne (Nashville Honeymoon), Leigh Crow and Ruby Vixen (Velvetta), Aaron Burnham (Aaron Burnham and the Brushfires), Andres Miguel Cervantes, along with Jill Rogers & Crying Time, with Joe Goldmark on pedal steel.

Jill Rogers and Crying Time have been packing dance floors, bars, and listening rooms for a decade in Northern California’s lively country scene. Jill Rogers’s beautiful 70’s-era voice is backed up by a musicians’ band, with a deep bench of accomplished players. Myles Boisen is an inventive guitarist who provides soulful and unpredictable solos, reflecting decades of experience as a session player (Tom Waits) and record producer (California Honeydrops, Club Foot Orchestra). Western swing veteran Tony Marcus (Cheap Suit Serenaders) plays the whole of American music on fiddle. Russell Kiel (bass) learned roots music from his days running sound for the original Freight and Salvage Coffeehouse in Berkeley. Drummer Tim Rowe, who wrote a Master’s thesis on George Jones, comes to country music from a history of punk and avant garde performance. Each musician brings a wealth of experience in performing and recording, and together they produce tightly woven, spry and energetic sets. Crying Time is known for the variety and dynamism they bring to their interpretations of the classics and Jill’s beautiful, sad songs. Country singing from Oakland standouts. Real musicians, not just stompers. Jill Rogers is an amazing singer. Just plain beautiful. - KALX Radio
