About this Event
Commemorating the 50th anniversary of Charles Burnett’s Killer of Sheep (‘75-77’), a landmark of African American & independent cinema, directed, written, shot, and edited by Burnett. One of the “LA Rebellion” filmmakers at UCLA, Burnett’s film is an unvarnished look at lower class black life in LA, yet sparkles with moments of great tenderness. Plus, a new documentary by Alan Snitow & Deborah Kaufman on SF-based African American artist Dewey Crumpler, whose art was inspired by the Black Power movement of the1960s-1970s. Crumpler, who has influenced many younger artists, asks “What is a political artist?”
