“Magic” here does not mean the supernatural as explanation. It refers to moments when reality seems to loosen, when perception shifts, when coincidence feels charged, when an image or a person unsettles what we thought was stable. These films approach magic as a human faculty before it is a genre: the mind’s capacity to transform what it encounters through desire, fear, memory, imagination.
Across horror, animation, fantasy, melodrama, and myth, what returns is the fragile boundary between inner and outer worlds. Sometimes the disturbance is beautiful, sometimes comic, sometimes terrifying. The question is not whether another world exists, but how this one expands when attention changes.

Hayao Miyazaki’s 1989 film follows Kiki, a thirteen-year-old witch who leaves home, as tradition requires, to spend a year living independently in a new town. She supports herself by starting a delivery service using her ability to fly. The premise includes witches and talking cats, but the film treats these elements as ordinary conditions rather than sources of conflict. The drama unfolds instead through work, fatigue, self-doubt, and the slow negotiation of belonging.
Unlike fantasy structured around threat or conquest, Kiki’s Delivery Service focuses on competence and vulnerability. Miyazaki builds a detailed urban environment (shops, bakeries, harbor traffic, domestic interiors) where magic coexists with everyday labor. The loss and recovery of Kiki’s flying ability becomes less a supernatural event than an index of confidence and identity. Often discussed within the history of Studio Ghibli as a defining early work, the film remains notable for its attention to adolescence as a practical and emotional apprenticeship, where independence is earned through repetition, error, and care.

Η «μαγεία» εδώ δεν σημαίνει το υπερφυσικό ως εξήγηση. Αναφέρεται σε στιγμές όπου η πραγματικότητα μοιάζει να χαλαρώνει όταν η αντίληψη μετατοπίζεται, όταν μια σύμπτωση φορτίζεται νοηματικά, όταν μια εικόνα ή ένα πρόσωπο διαταράσσει αυτό που θεωρούσαμε σταθερό. Οι ταινίες αυτές αντιμετωπίζουν τη μαγεία πρώτα ως ανθρώπινη ικανότητα και μετά ως είδος: τη δυνατότητα του νου να μεταμορφώνει ό,τι συναντά μέσω της επιθυμίας, του φόβου, της μνήμης και της φαντασίας.
Μέσα από τρόμο, animation, φαντασία, μελόδραμα και μύθο, επανέρχεται το εύθραυστο όριο ανάμεσα στον εσωτερικό και τον εξωτερικό κόσμο. Άλλοτε η διαταραχή είναι όμορφη, άλλοτε κωμική, άλλοτε τρομακτική. Το ερώτημα δεν είναι αν υπάρχει ένας άλλος κόσμος, αλλά πώς αυτός ο κόσμος διευρύνεται όταν αλλάζει η προσοχή. Ο ίδιος ο κινηματογράφος συμμετέχει σε αυτή τη διεύρυνση: φως, χρώμα, κίνηση, ρυθμός και ξαφνικά αυτό που έμοιαζε δεδομένο γίνεται αβέβαιο.
