About this Event

Zarina Zabrisky relocated to Ukraine at the start of the Russian full-scale invasion in 2022 and has lived there ever since. She is the only foreign journalist based in Kherson.

She, along with her crew, created this 72-minute documentary that tells Kherson’s story from the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion: occupation, resistance, liberation, the Nova Kakhovka Dam flood, and human safari, a war crime and crime against humanity documented in three UN reports and a Human Rights Watch report, in which Russia uses drones to hunt and attack civilians. Residents who survived the occupation and flood share their harrowing accounts while living daily life under round-the-clock attacks. Yet there is beauty in the community that persists in Kherson: theater in bomb shelters, embroidery and yoga during air raids, and dance amid the shelling.

The film crew works while living through the war. Its composer fought as a partisan during the occupation. Its director of photography lost his home. Its editor cut the film under drone attacks.

Translated into ten languages, the documentary has screened in more than a dozen countries, and featured as an official side event at the Munich Security Conference, on Capitol Hill, and at the Berlin Doxumentale Festival.

At Manny's, this is our chance to hear the story of the most dangerous city in Ukraine and have a conversation online with the filmmaker still stationed there.

This is our chance to build understanding across an ocean and truly understand the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine.

Join us from 6:00-7:30pm for the film screening, and from 7:30-8:00pm for a discussion with filmmaker Zarina Zabrisky.
