As artificial intelligence rapidly transforms the tools available to creators of all kinds, a group of Bay Area filmmakers, AI product developers and strategists, legal scholars, and film-industry leaders will convene for an important conversation exploring independent filmmaking in the age of AI.
At the center of the conversation is an increasingly consequential question for independent filmmakers: how can AI can make filmmaking more accessible without undermining the human creativity, labor and authenticity at its core
Panelists will explore the opportunities AI-powered tools may offer independent and under-resourced filmmakers while confronting urgent questions around labor, authorship, copyright, creative ownership, authenticity, disclosure and filmmakers’ responsibilities to their audiences.
The discussion will also consider how individual filmmakers can establish their own ethical boundaries as AI-driven technologies become increasingly integrated into everyday creative tools and production workflows.
The panel is being organized in conjunction with the crowdfunding campaign for , an upcoming action short set in San Francisco that pits a human rideshare driver against a driverless robotaxi. Written and directed by French-American filmmaker Romain Thomassin and produced by Anna Robertson of Step One Films, the film uses the visceral language of the classic car chase to explore a city grappling with rapid technological change and the growing fear of human obsolescence.
