ABOUT THE BOOK

Sisters Beth and Ellen have always been very close. Ellen-the youngest of three daughters-is the emotional one, always seeking attention and, at times, acting "funny" to get it. The rest of the family dismisses Ellen's behavior as "overdramatizing."

But as Ellen matures, the boundaries between her fantasy life and reality blur until, when she becomes a mother, her family is forced to act. Despite her responsibilities to her own growing family, Beth repeatedly tries to save her sister, risking her own stable life until she is in danger of losing it all.

Finally, filled with guilt and anguish over how Ellen's actions are affecting the rest of the family, Beth must decide how much she can sacrifice to save the sister she loves.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Kate Woodworth is the award-winning author of the literary climate fiction novel Little Great Island and of Racing into the Dark, a novel about the heartache of loving someone with a mental illness and the sacrifices we make to care for the people we love. Racing into the Dark was hailed by Publishers Weekly as hitting “the mark repeatedly with emotional truths and fluid prose” and praised by Booklist as “a compelling exploration of mental illness…emotionally gripping”. A retired medical writer and a certified-of-life doula, she earned her MFA from Boston University and lives in the Boston area.

ABOUT THE MODERATORS

Rae Simpson is an independent mental health advocate, working to bring new advances and supports to mental health treatment and care. She also serves on the board of NAMI-Cambridge/Middlesex, where she facilitates support groups and answers the helpline, tapping her own experience as the mother of a son with significant mental health challenges. She has collaborated with organizations such as the Massachusetts Association for Mental Health, Boston Museum of Science, Advocates, and the FrameWorks Institute, and she has testified on key mental health bills in the Massachusetts state legislature.

With a PhD in communication research from Stanford University, Rae served on the faculty at MIT for 11 years and senior staff for 25 years. She created and directed MIT’s first science journalism programs, then MIT’s first family resource center. She also served as a consultant to the World Health Organization, United Nations, Harvard’s Center for Health Communication, and others, and founded the National Parenting Education Network.

Rae has given over a hundred presentations in the US and abroad, and published over 50 scholarly and popular articles, including in the New York Times, the Washington Post, Psychology Today, Cognoscenti, and others.

Mira T. Lee’s debut novel, Everything Here is Beautiful, was selected as a Top 10 Debut by the American Booksellers Association, and named a Best Fiction title of 2018 by Amazon, O Magazine, Real Simple, and the Goodreads Readers Choice Awards. Her stories and essays have appeared in publications such as the New York Times, Tin House, Real Simple, the Southern Review, Missouri Review, and Harvard Review. Mira has worked as a graphic designer for over 20 years, specializing in design for authors, artists, musicians and other creative types. She lives in Cambridge, MA.
