Documentary about Kafka's final stages of life
As part of the Weeks of the German Language 2024 and to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Franz Kafka's death we warmly invite you to a screening of the documentary film "Kafka's Last Journey" by Hans-Gerd Koch and Clemens Schmiedbauer. This event is held in collaboration with the Austrian Embassy.

In this 65-minute documentary the final stages of Franz Kafka's life are vividly traced. The film takes us from his hometown of Prague to the Wienerwald Sanatorium near Pernitz the University Hospital in Vienna and finally to the Dr. Hermann Sanatorium in Kierling near Klosterneuburg.
Using Kafka's personal letters and medical documents the film not only illuminates the progression of his illness but also provides intimate insights into the inner life of the poet and his closest confidants including Dora Diamant and Robert Klopstock. Interviews with Kafka researchers allow for a deeper understanding of the author during his final years. A medical historian explains Kafka's health deterioration and the helplessness of doctors in light of the medical practices of the time.
"Kafka's Last Journey" offers a poignant and sensitive look at Kafka's farewell to life and the immense suffering he endured in his final weeks.
