K-Cinema Korean Movie Night: Punch(완득이)

High school can be tough, but for 17-year-old Wan-deuk (Yoo Ah-in), it’s constant misery. He’s bored with class, embarrassed by his father, and doesn’t even know his mother. Wan-deuk is timid but won’t hesitate to take a swing at anyone who teases him – except of course for his meddlesome homeroom teacher, Dong-joo (Kim Yun-seok). Dong-joo has seen many troubled youths like Wan-deuk, and encourages him to find himself. Even though he picks on him endlessly, he will also come to Wan-deuk’s aid when he needs it most.

Based on the 2008 novel Wandeuk-yi by Kim Ryeo-ryeong, the touching and hilarious (2011) by director Lee Han premiered at the prestigious Busan International Film Festival and was one of the highest grossing films of that year, earning its two actors, veteran Kim Yun-seok and newcomer Yoo Ah-in, awards at the KOFRA Film awards.

줄거리: 남들보다 키는 작지만 자신에게만은 누구보다 큰 존재인 아버지와 언제부터인가 가족이 되어버린 삼촌과 함께 사는 고등학생 완득이. 가진 것도, 꿈도, 희망도 없는 완득이 간절히 바라는 것이 딱 하나 있었으니, 바로 담임 ‘똥주’가 없어지는 것! 사사건건 자신의 일에 간섭하는 데다 급기야 옆집 옥탑방에 살면서 밤낮없이 자신을 불러대는 ‘똥주’. 유독 완득에게 무한한 관심을 갖고 있는 동주는 학교에서는 숨기고 싶은 가족사와 사생활을 폭로하여 완득을 창피하게 만들고, 집에 오면 학교에서 수급 받은 햇반마저 탈취하는 행각으로 완득을 괴롭힌다. 그러던 어느 날, 존재조차 모르고 살았던 친엄마를 만나 보라는 동주의 넓은 오지랖에 완득은 더 이상 참지 못하고 가출을 계획해보지만, 완득을 향한 동주의 관심은 식을 줄을 모르는데…!
