Junior Field Trip: Shark Science with X-Oceans

Join us for a shark-focused field trip at St. Francis Xavier University on Friday, November 22nd (a PD day)! We're teaming up with X-Oceans to explore the incredible adaptations and importance of sharks in the ocean through hands-on activities and real world research. This field trip will be held indoors and no prior knowledge is needed!

Details:

• Friday, November 22nd
• 9:30am – 3:00 pm
• St. Francis Xavier University Biology Department
• Pay-what-you-can, but full cost is $40/participant
• Maximum 15 participants
• For girls and under-represented genders ("girls+")
• Ages 9-12

Main Activities:

• Assist in a guided dissection of a spiny dogfish shark (led by shark scientist and Terranaut Club staff member Hunter Hogan)
• Use real photos of great white sharks in Nova Scotia to learn about how photo ID is used in conservation and research
• Explore shark anatomy and biology with real specimens, including jaws and teeth
• Explore seafloor mapping and how it can be applied to shark research
• Learn about shark conservation and their important role in our oceans
• Learn about careers in STEM and what it’s like to study marine biology at college and university

Participants should come prepared with a lunch and snacks.

Unlike our summer programs, there is no nomination process for workshops. Registration is first come, first served, and can be completed on this page. Though the cost of this program is $40 per participant, it is pay-what-you-can and your donation must be made upon registering.
