This year, we are spreading our Galveston roots by joining our cousins, Rick and Brenda Reese, in South Carolina to reconnect and celebrate freedom.Together, we explore one of the earliest sites of Black history in America, walking the spaces where nearly half of the enslaved Africans brought to North America first entered this country and began the difficult journey that would shape generations to come.
Included in our tour this year is a glimpse into Gullah culture, one of the strongest surviving connections between African heritage and African American life in the United States.
We are especially honored that this part of our journey reflects the heritage of our cousin Brenda Reese, whose Gullah heritage is part of the living legacy of the coastal region affectionately called Lowcountry.
