EDMONDS CITY PARK: Picnic Shelter 1
Each year I write to you all with the promise of a warm, sunny day next July, in the midst of the darkest, coldest time of the year. This year is no different, except that I have even better news than just delivering the invitation to attend our next Juneau-Douglas Picnic – We will have our picnic shelter ALL DAY! After our gathering this past July, Del Jensen noticed that the shelter rental time is split into 2 sessions, and asked, “Why not just rent it for BOTH time slots?” So, that is what we will be doing for the 82nd edition of our Picnic!! This means no early set up, and even more important, we can all stay without getting shoo-ed off by the Parks Department.
Our 81st Annual Picnic went off like clockwork. We had 71 people attend, and again we welcomed many first-timers. Attendance was up by almost 20 people from 2022 – Thanks to all of you for taking the time to join in the festivities. Please continue to remind your friends and family to come out next year, to share with each other all those great Capitol City memories! And we will have more great Juneau swag to give away in the Raffle!
Our move to EDMONDS CITY PARK in 2019 seems to be a big success. While COVID wiped us out for a few summers, our attendance seems to be growing again. Many of you mention the ease of both getting there and finding parking. It will be our Picnic’s home for the foreseeable future. I will post the address of this fantastic park in my Spring letter/e-mail to all of you. Our big day for 2024 is July 14, the second Sunday of July. If you are in contact with your Thunder Mountain, Juneau, Douglas or Juneau-Douglas HS Reunion coordinators, let them know that the JD Picnic is an excellent place to host Reunion Class Gatherings.
I want to continue recognize all the volunteers who helped make the 2023 Picnic possible. Lynne Behrendt and Sierra Lange (my wife & daughter) for always bringing McDonald’s Life-Saving Lunch! Del Jensen for hosting the welcome table (Steven Carey would be proud!). Mike and Keela Kelley for your aid in loading the truck after the event. And to all of those who brought potluck-style food to share with the group – keep bringing those goodies next year. Without you, the Picnic would not be the joyous event that it continues to be!
Thanks also go out to all of you who contributed to the “Joe Abel Contribution Kettle”, and via PayPal. Without your ongoing contributions, it would be difficult to continue. Cake, coffee, permit costs and paying for the truck use to haul the Picnic back and forth from my house; it all adds up. Please continue to donate as you are able; we appreciate it. I continue to travel back “home” many times each year - Thunder Mountain HS Volleyball; UAS Alumni Board Meetings; and family visits. It never seems to get old, and it is ALWAYS good to connect with my past, present and future.
You will hear from me again close to Memorial Day of 2024. Until then, have a Blessed Channukah, Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year! I hope that memories of home are with those here in the Lower 48; and that hopes of sunshine are with those wintering over up North!
