About this Event
Ready for a conservation success story best seen at bedtime? Join the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources for a rare, up-close view of the federally protected June sucker. Our trained staff will demonstrate a nighttime fish-sampling method, using a spotlight to find fish. They will also share about the importance of this species and ongoing conservation efforts.
This free wildlife viewing event will be held on Thursday, May 28, from 8:30–10:30 p.m.,, at the Lower Provo River. DWR biologists will be on hand to answer your questions and give you a close look at these incredible fish.
Important: This event has limited registration so as not to overwhelm our staff or disrupt the fish at our sampling site. It is also weather-dependent and subject to cancellation.
What to expect:
- Attendees will be able to watch — first hand from the shoreline — as DWR staff wade through the river with spotlights to locate and net June sucker.
- Once the fish are caught, biologists will process them, giving attendees an up-close look at these unique fish. (All the fish will be released unharmed.)
- Observation areas will be on rocky shorelines and will require light hiking at night.
- Parking and site information will be emailed to registered attendees the week of the event.
- During the event, please remember that this is a pivotal time for the June sucker to spawn, so please do not harass the fish and stay out of the water.
What to bring:
- Come dressed for the weather, as this is an outdoor event.
- Bring a flashlight or head lamp to help navigate in the dark.
- Optional: Camp chair, water, snacks, bugspray.
