July 25 Open Studios featuring Free Art Workshop & City of Water Day Panel

A day of activities at LMCC's Arts Center with Open Studios, a family-friendly art workshop, and climate panel with artists and academics.
About this Event

Explore the multidisciplinary practices – painting, sculpture, video, and more – of the 2026 Arts Center Residents at our July Open Studios. This open house event is free, informal and includes artistic activations in studios and rehearsal spaces throughout the day.

Also at the Arts Center:

From 1-3pm, take part in Recycled Runway, a free, family-friendly art-making workshop with Sari Nordman. Create a colorful, one-of-a-kind wearable accessory from recycled plastic that celebrates your individual NYC style! Central to her practice, Nordman addresses eco-anxiety through environmental art projects that foster social engagement and utilize recycled plastic. The workshop will be ongoing so visitors are welcome to participate for as long as they would like. Reservations encouraged for headcount and supplies.

At 3:15pm, join LMCC Artistic Director, Moe Yousuf, artist Leslie Wayne and academics from Stony Brook University for a City of Water Day panel as they discuss issues at the intersection of art-making, climate change and the environment. Reservations encouraged.

The Unintended Blues, Leslie Wayne, Upper Gallery

Leslie Wayne documents rising sea levels through aerial landscape paintings of vulnerable US shorelines and melting icebergs in the Arctic Circle. In these works and additional multimedia pieces, Wayne captures the beauty of our natural environment and renders with graphic clarity one of our greatest existential threats.

The Tempestry Collection, Upper Lobby

New York City’s first Tempestry Collection features sixteen hand-knitted panels or “tempestries,” each depicting a full year of the city’s daily temperature data rendered into various colors.

Recycled Runway : Free All-Ages Climate Art Workshop

Info: Create a colorful, one-of-kind wearable accessory from recycled plastic that celebrates your individual NYC style! Arts Center Resident Artist Sari Nordman addresses eco-anxiety through environmental art projects that foster social engagement and utilize recycled plastic. Drawing on 15 years of experience as a teaching artist in NYC public schools, Sari finds joy in sharing their practice and collaborating with diverse communities.

All materials will be provided, though participants are encouraged to bring clean, colorful recycled plastics such as shopping bags, newspaper sleeves, and toilet paper or paper towel packaging. Stay for the entire event or drop in for a few minutes.

The workshop will be ongoing and visitors are welcome to participate for as long as they would like.

City of Water Day: Water Studies Panel

Info: As part of City of Water Day, LMCC's CEO and Artistic Producer, Moe Yousuf will moderate a discussion with artists, and academics from Stony Brook University exploring issues of art-making, creativity, climate change and environment. The panel discussion will be followed by an informal conversation with audience attendees. Participants include:
