The 76-member Valley Winds will perform music based around the theme “Joy,” beginning with ‘Fantasia in G’ by Minnesota composer Timothy Mahr. The piece is based on Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy.”
Rebecca Jarvis’s new piece “Lions of Trafalgar” will be performed, with Jarvis, a member of Valley Winds, as guest conductor. "Variations on a Scandinavian Sailor’s Song,” by Minnesota composer J. Robert Hanson, will also be presented.
Valley Winds conductor Tedd Gullickson, along with his brothers, commissioned a piece in memory of their mother titled, “Extra! Extra! Read All About It!” Syb Gullickson was an award-winning editor with The Forum of Fargo, N.D.
The piece was written by Mark Wolfram, who grew up in Bloomington, making it four Minnesota composers featured at the concert.
Principal trumpet Tim Davis will be featured on Sammy Nestico’s “Portrait of a Trumpet.” The beautiful “Heart of the Morn,” by H Owen Reed, and the rousing “Wedding Dance,” by Jacques Press, will be performed.
As a special treat, Charolette Baker, Drum Major for the University of Minnesota Marching Band will guest conduct John Phillip Sousa’s “Minnesota March” in full regalia.
“Valley Winds' mission statement includes ‘playing quality musical literature at a high level, and having fun doing it’” stated Valley Winds bassist Mike Maiers. “Emphasizing the last part, I sincerely appreciate my musical friends in VW, and I enjoy my time with them at our weekly rehearsals. I’m looking forward to our first concert of the season!”
Valley Winds will perform four major concerts this year and will be touring to Fargo on Oct. 25 to perform a joint concert with the Lake Agassiz Wind Symphony at Horace High School. Tedd Gullickson commented, “This will be a unique opportunity to musically represent the south metro to a new audience. The Winds and I are very excited about the trip.” Last winter the Lake Agassiz Wind Symphony performed in Minneapolis as part of the Minnesota state music convention.
Valley Winds is a member of the Association of Concert Bands and has been selected as the host band for its 2029 National Convention in Bloomington.
“This is a great honor for our young band. We are looking forward to hosting and performing at this important event,” Gullickson said.
