Journey to Mictlan: The Indigeneity of What We Know as Day of the Dead
About this Event
Join Cenit Munoz for a workshop to help with the creation of an installation that honours people who have died as a result of the drug crisis and our loved ones and ancestors we wish to remember. This workshop will include learning about Day of the Dead and the Indigenous traditions before colonization, how colonization impacted these traditions, and what Day of the Dead represents today (the contemporary fascination with Catrinas, cultural appropriation and commercialization). This workshop includes some theory, conversation and reflection but we will focus on creating artwork together. Please note, this activity intentionally deals with subjects related to death, memory, grief, ancestry, colonization, identity, and the ways we remember those who are no longer physically with us.
The installation will remain up during our gallery hours the following week from 12-5 pm Wednesday November 4- Saturday November 7.
What to bring: objects or written messages to honour loved ones who have transitioned, or to honour those we lost due to the drug crisis. It is better if you are comfortable leaving the objects there for the duration of the exhibition.
Workshop - Monday November 2- 5-8 pm
Free/ by donation. Pre-registration encouraged.
