Why: Everyday Americans are at a breaking point. As fresh crises scream from the headlines every single day, burnout and helplessness are driving division right when we need each other most. Meanwhile, people inside prisons, jails, and detention centers are becoming even more marginalized. As the Pr*son industrial complex grows and transparency around abuse is further compromised, advocacy groups are desperate for new and innovative ways to make a difference.

In the wake of this exhaustion and isolation, the Journey to Justice Bus Tour is providing a new roadmap for change. We’re traveling the nation to ignite conversation, inspire action, and empower some of the most promising sources of vision and creativity that every transformational movement needs: universities and their surrounding communities.

These spaces are hubs of learning, activism, and public discourse — places where ideas take root and movements gain momentum. By bringing together students, educators, survivors, community organizers, and thought leaders, we are building a national network of change-makers committed to human rights, justice, and ending torture.

How: The most effective and sustained movements are those that draw people in — not just through urgency, but through shared experiences. When advocacy feels engaging and deeply human, it becomes more accessible to people from all walks of life. This approach helps movements grow organically, bringing in new allies and sustaining long-term engagement.

That said, while making activism inviting and engaging is crucial, there’s a balance to strike. Too much emphasis on making it "fun" can risk downplaying the gravity of the issue or alienating those who are deeply impacted. It’s important to create spaces where both joy and urgency coexist — where people feel both the pull of inspiration and the weight of responsibility. This ensures that engagement is not just momentary but transformative and lasting.

What makes our tour stand out is two-fold:

• Our Bus: A Mobile Hub for Change: Think of it as a traveling advocacy hub: part mobile library, part immersive experience. It’s a place to congregate and create, share ideas, read powerful stories, and take action. From VR experiences and interactive “choose-your-own-adventure” websites to reading rooms and a life-sized solitary cell model, our “artivism” experiences, paired with Chris Blackwell’s latest book, bring the issue of solitary confinement to life.
