How can journalists navigate an age of growing conflict
About this Event

Description:

At a time of intensifying global conflict, journalists find themselves under a number of constraints as they attempt to fulfill their democratic role in society and tell the truth. Yet reporting does not occur in a vacuum. Newsrooms operate within institutional pressures, editorial constraints, audience expectations, and in an increasingly fractured media ecosystem.

This panel convenes journalists working across a number of networks to examine the ethical and practical realities of reporting on conflict and political violence. Moving beyond abstract debates about “objectivity”, the discussion will explore how narratives are constructed and contested – and how journalism can ideally serve the public and potentially contribute to peaceful outcomes.

Moderator:

Thom Shanker was named director of the Project for Media and National Security in June 2021, after a nearly quarter-century career with The New York Times, including 13 years as Pentagon correspondent covering the Department of Defense, overseas combat operations and national security policy. Early in the war in Afghanistan, Mr. Shanker embedded with Army Special Forces at Kandahar. He subsequently conducted dozens of reporting trips to Afghanistan and Iraq, and embedded in the field with units from the squad and company level through battalion, brigade, division and corps. Most recently, he had served as Deputy Washington Editor for The Times, managing coverage of the military, diplomacy and veterans’ affairs.

Panelists:

  1. Pamela Brown is a multi award-winning CNN anchor and chief investigative correspondent, who currently anchors The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer and Pamela Brown weekdays from 10a to 12pET.
  2. Jack Detsch is a defense reporter at POLITICO, where he covers the Pentagon, the military services, and the combatant commands, looking into the movements of troops, planes, tanks, and personalities that shape power politics in Washington and around the globe.
  3. Antoine Brimal founded the conflict media organisation Modern Insurgent which has a team with 40+ journalists/reporters from 20+ countries, producing high-impact articles, documentaries, podcasts, and intelligence reports. Their work has been featured in newspapers, radio shows, and on television outlets globally. Antoine is pursuing an MA in Conflict Resolution from Georgetown University.

Lunch will be provided.
