Joshua Colangelo-Bryan presents Through the Gates of Hell w/ Keith Ellison

Through the Gates of Hell is an account of the legal and security issues that arose as he represented GTMO prisoners, but even more, its focus is on the unlikely friendship he forged with Jaber Muhammed, a detainee there who was among those branded by Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld as the “most dangerous, best-trained, vicious killers on the face of the earth.” Despite dehumanizing conditions within the world’s most infamous detention center, the two men forge a profound bond in their shared pursuit of justice. It’s a rare story about humanity and friendship at GTMO, and about what it takes to fight for human rights in the face of demagoguery and the demonization of entire groups of people.

Joshua Colangelo-Bryan is Special Counsel at Human Rights First, where he spearheads innovative impact litigation and advocacy efforts to advance international human rights, uphold democratic principles, and support defenders of human rights globally. He also conducts human rights investigations in countries such as Yemen, Syria, and Bahrain, and defends parties named in Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation, including clients advocating for Palestinian rights and religious pluralism in India.

Keith Ellison has served as Minnesota’s 30th attorney general since January 2019, focusing on advancing dignity, safety, and fairness for Minnesotans. Previously, he represented Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, championing consumer, worker, housing, and civil-rights protections and founding the Congressional Antitrust and Consumer Justice Caucuses. Before Congress, he was a civil-rights attorney, including serving as executive director of the Legal Rights Center. Ellison is the first African American and first Muslim American elected to statewide office in Minnesota.

Q: Do I need to register?

A: Please do if at all possible! Use the registration button above. Registering ahead of time helps us with scheduling, book ordering, and other decisions that are made several weeks prior to the event. The more info we have ahead of time, the better.

With a registered list, we can also easily and directly communicate event updates such as postponements or cancellations.

If you are unable to sign up online, please call or visit the bookstore and register with a bookseller.

Walk-ins are always welcome, but seating decisions are made based on registered attendance and seating priority is given to registered attendees first.

Q: Are in store events free?

A: Yes, Magers & Quinn events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

Q: Are masks required?

A: Masks are not required to browse in the store or at most events. Some events may come with a request for masking for the health and safety of the author. If so it will be noted here whenever possible.
