Singer Jonathan Karrant salutes the music of legendary lyricist Johnny Mercer, whose compositions made a significant impact on the Great American Songbook. With songs like "Autumn Leaves," "Moon River," "Skylark" and "Summer Wind,” Mercer was a top writer for Capital Records in the 1950s and '60s, and collaborated with several iconic composers. His songwriting was considered to be very prolific and provocative, creating word images through his lyrics, triggering thoughts and emotions. With a repertoire that spans classic jazz standards and contemporary interpretations, Karrant will bring a modern elegance to Mercer’s songs. He will be joined by pianist Joshua White, bassist Justin Grinnell and drummer Julien Cantelm.
Jonathan Karrant’s album “On and On” hit #4 on the Billboard Jazz Charts and was produced under the musical direction of Josh Nelson. His album “Live” hit #2 on the iTunes Jazz Charts and was recorded at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts. "Shadows Fall" was an album collaboration with Thelonious Monk Award winning pianist Joshua White and was included in the top Jazz albums of the year by RMR. Jonathan's most recent albums are a holiday album titled "Christmas Wish" and a unique collection of songs titled "Eclectic". These albums feature duets with singers Diane Schuur and Jane Monheit plus feature trumpeter Kenny Rampton, pianist Joe Alterman and saxophonist Houston Person. Jonathan has received several honors including the New York City Jazz Cabaret Honors, “Best Singer” for the Bravo California Awards and he was named one of the top 10 rising jazz vocalists by Downbeat.
